Our story

Alfred Sowerby (1812 to 1889) was a wool merchant with a serious problem. By 1870 his house on Fold Lane contained an estimated nine thousand objects and very little furniture.

The museum opened in 1874 with Sowerby as its first, unpaid and largely unmanageable curator.
